Michael Carberry hit a century for the second successive Championship game as Hampshire fought back on day two against Sussex at Arundel.

Carberry struck a six and 17 fours in his 112 as Hampshire closed on 213-2, still 228 behind the hosts' first innings total of 441.

Sussex had resumed on 330-7, with Luke Wright unbeaten on 53.

He went on to make 104, sharing 85 for the eighth wicket with Ollie Rayner, before falling to Imran Tahir (5-140).

Wright was eventually last man out, but saw Rayner dominate their partnership on his way to his maiden Championship half-century.

He was eventually out for 60 - caught by Tahir on the square leg boundary hooking Dimitri Mascarenhas - but not before he had easily passed his previous best first-class score of 25.

Instead, it was the dismissal of Corey Collymore for a second-ball duck that forced Wright on to the offensive.

The England one-day all-rounder hit Mascarenhas for a four and two sixes in one over and brought up his maiden Championship century, made off 162 balls, with a six over the midwicket boundary off Tahir.

He was eventually out trying to hit the Pakistani spinner out of the ground again, only to sky a catch to Carberry.

Hampshire's reply got off to a solid start, with Carberry, who also hit a ton last week against Somerset, dominating an opening stand of 107 with Jimmy Adams.

Their partnership was eventually ended when Adams offered a return catch to Rayner for 33.

That failed to halt Carberry's momentum and he brought up his century with a four off Yasir Arafat before becoming Rayner's second victim when he edged to Ed Joyce at slip.

But that proved to be Sussex's last success as Michael Lumb (38no) and John Crawley (13no) saw Hampshire safely to stumps.
