Rain washes out Edgbaston clash

PRO40 DIVISION TWO, Edgbaston:
Warwickshire v Middlesex
MATCH ABANDONED - RAIN. Middlesex 10-0 (2ov)
(Warwicks 1pt, Middlesex 1pt)

NatWest Pro40

Heavy showers caused the Pro40 game between Warwickshire and Middlesex at Edgbaston to be abandoned after only two overs.

Only one ball was possible before rain forced an initial hour-long delay.

But when play resumed, only 11 more balls were bowled before the players were taken off again as more rain fell.

And with the outfield already saturated, a further shower left the umpires with little option but to call off the contest at around 1930 BST.

It meant a wasted 400-mile round trip for Warwickshire batsman James Ord, who was summoned from a second XI game against Durham at Ropery Lane in Chester-le-Street after captain Ian Westwood was taken ill.

The 21-year-old, the grandson of the late Jimmy Ord, who was a member of Warwickshire's 1951 County Championship winning side, was 41 not out when he got the call to dash to Birmingham.

Ord will now return north to get ready for a three-day Second XI Championship match which gets underway at the Riverside on Wednesday.
