Steffan Jones took 59 first-class wickets for Derbyshire in 2006 |
Steffan Jones marked his Derbyshire return by taking four wickets to give them the advantage on day two against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham. The Somerset paceman has rejoined the side he left in 2006 on a month's loan. He picked up 4-44 as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 164, a first-innings deficit of 162, with only Alex Gidman (55) providing any resistance. The visitors then declined to enforce the follow-on and reached 126-3 at the close, with Wayne Madsen 71 not out. After Gloucestershire resumed on 10-0, Craig Spearman was caught behind by James Pipe and Hamish Marshall was run out as the hosts reached lunch on 71-2. After the break, Kadeer Ali (25) was bowled by Graham Wagg and Chris Taylor was caught behind off Tim Groenewald before Gidman and James Franklin (14) shared a fifth-wicket stand of 32. However, when Franklin was bowled by Greg Smith it sparked a collapse which saw the home side slump from 121-4 to 138-9 inside seven overs. Anthony Ireland and Vikram Banerjee shared a last-wicket stand of 26, with Ireland equalling his career-best score of 16 when he was bowled by Groenewald. Derbyshire's second innings got off to a poor start when Rogers snicked a legside catch to wicketkeeper Steve Snell off Franklin's opening ball of the second over. That gave the New Zealander an unusual hat-trick after he had taken the last two Derbyshire wickets in the first innings with successive deliveries. Garry Park fell cheaply to Jon Lewis before Dan Redfern (31) combined with Madsen to share 89 for the third wicket. Redfern fell lbw to Marshall, but Jake Needham joined Madsen to take Derbyshire through to a lead of 288 at the close.
