Heavy rain ruled out the prospect of an exciting finish between the two local rivals on the final day at Derby.

Although the rain eased shortly after midday, another downpour during the scheduled lunch interval put paid to any chance of play.

Overnight, Leicestershire were leading by 256 runs on 209-7 in their second innings, with Tom New unbeaten on 63.

The draw means Derbyshire remain unbeaten at home in the championship since September 2007.

Although the match ended in anti-climax, it was one that New will remember. He scored two half-centuries and took six catches against the county he played for on loan last season.
