COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Headingley Yorkshire v Somerset 11-14 June CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO: Yorkshire 277 & 26-1, Somerset 230 (Yorks 5pts, Somerset 4pts)
Hoggard's five wickets were crucial in dismantling Somerset on day two |
Yorkshire seamer Matthew Hoggard took five wickets to put the Tykes in the driving seat against Somerset at the end of day two at Headingley. Having battled to 277 all out, Hoggard set about the Somerset batsmen to end the innings with figures of 5-56. Somerset owed much to wicketkeeper Chris Kieswetter (83) and bowler Alfonso Thomas (64no) to finish on 230. Charl Willoughby then dismissed Jacques Rudolph as Yorkshire came off in their second innings on 26-1, 73 ahead. Yorkshire will feel satisfied with their first-innings display and despite missing out on extra batting points, falling short of 300, they were boosted as Hoggard set to work on the Somerset batting. First he scalped former England colleague Marcus Trescothick, out for a duck after edging to Gerard Brophy. He then added Justin Langer for no runs and, having seen off James Hildreth, then accounted for the dangerous South African Zander de Bruyn to make it a hat-trick of ducks. | 606: DEBATE |
Somerset rallied under patient opener Arul Suppeth, who provided an ideal foil for South African wicketkeeper Kieswetter to cut loose. When Suppeth and then Peter Trego went soon after, Somerset wobbled a little before Thomas steadied the ship with a equally patient 64 from 131 balls. However, he lacked real support, pace bowler David Stiff's 28 aside, and Yorkshire wrapped up the innings with a lead of 47. Openers Rudolph and Joe Sayers looked to have made a bright, if slow, start for the Tykes with 26, before Willoughby struck again to dislodge Rudolph, and Hoggard was sent in as the night-watchman to hold the fort before stumps.
