COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Grace Road 6-9 June 2009 Leicestershire 403-9 draw with Kent 265-2 (Leicestershire 9pts, Kent 9pts)
Denly hit 13 fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 116 |
Joe Denly scored his first Championship century of the season as Kent's trip to Leicestershire drifted to an inevitable rain-affected draw at Grace Road. The young opener made an unbeaten 116, sharing a second-wicket stand of 181 with Geraint Jones, who continued his fine run of form with a sparkling 87. Following a wash-out for the first two days, Kent closed on 265-2. Earlier, the home side moved on from their overnight 351-6 to declare at 403-9, with Tom New unbeaten on 85. Leicestershire might still be searching for their first win in Division Two, but this was their biggest total of the season and the first time they have taken maximum batting points. And 24-year-old wicket-keeper New was at the crease buoyed by the added bonus of being told he will be taking over behind the stumps in Championship games from the end of this month. Veteran Paul Nixon has decided to step down from that role, although the 38-year-old will continue to captain the side.
