COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Riverside Durham v Hampshire 6-9 June (Play starts 1100 BST) Hampshire 105 Durham 84-2 (Durham 3pts, Hampshire 0pts)
Harmison and Onions took combined figures of 7-65 |
England pacemen past and present Steve Harmison and Graham Onions put Durham in charge after day one of their County Championship match with Hampshire. Current Test bowler Onions took three early wickets at the Riverside to reduce the visitors to 26-4. Harmison (4-43) then cleaned up the tail as Hampshire were dismissed for 105, Nic Pothas top scoring with 35. Durham had reached 84-2 in reply by the close, with an excellent chance of building a big first innings lead. After heavy overnight rain caused a delayed start it looked a good toss for Durham captain Will Smith to win and so it proved as Onions removed Michael Carberry with the sixth ball of the game. Callum Thorp had Jimmy Adams caught at gully before Onions (3-22) found the edges of John Crawley and Sean Ervine to leave Hampshire 26-4. The in-form Michael Lumb and Pothas threatened a recovery, only for Mitch Claydon to dismiss Lumb and Liam Dawson with successive deliveries. Lumb was trapped leg before, while Dawson had his stumps rearranged. | 606: DEBATE |
That was the cue for Harmison to polish off the innings, taking the final four wickets to fall, including Hampshire captain Pothas, who was caught at gully. Hampshire earned an early breakthrough when James Tomlinson had Michael Di Venuto caught at gully by Crawley. And although Mark Stoneman departed just before the close for 44 following a second-wicket stand with Smith (21 not out) worth 68, it was very much Durham's day.
