TWENTY20 CUP, NORTH DIVISION, Trent Bridge: Durham 167-9 beat Nottinghamshire 163-6 by one wicket (Durham 2pts, Notts 0pts)
Claydon dismissed Adam Voges and Will Jefferson with the ball |
Mitch Claydon hit the final ball of the game for four as Durham sneaked a one-wicket Twenty20 Cup win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The scores were tied at 163 going into the last over, only for Durham to then fail to score off the first five balls. Gordon Muchall went leg before to Mark Ealham and Graham Onions was run out before Claydon finally saw them home. Durham looked out of it at 27-4 before Ian Blackwell (59) and Dale Benkenstein (53) added 103 to give them a chance. Will Jefferson had earlier hit 75 and Chris Read 43 not out in Notts' 163-6. They had come together with the home side in trouble on 49-4, after Neil Killeen (3-21) and Claydon (2-26) had both made inroads, and added a county fifth-wicket Twenty20 record of 103. But their efforts were in vain as Blackwell and Benkenstein both only faced 33 balls in blasting their side towards their victory whilst sharing a county record stand for any wicket in Twenty20 cricket, before Claydon saw them over the finishing line.
BBC Newcastle's Martin Emmerson reviews the action at Trent Bridge: "It was a nervy conclusion to a fascinating match but Durham are up and running in this year's Twenty20 Cup. "And just how many times do you see each team's innings mirroring the other like this? "Both sides posted record stands of 103 for the fifth wicket, but it was Durham's Ian Blackwell and Dale Benkenstein who ended up on the winning side. "Durham had a bad time of things in the Friends Provident Trophy but at least they ended the group stages with back-to-back wins and this makes it three in three. They seem to have found a batting formula now. Next up Derbyshire."
