FRIENDS PROVIDENT TROPHY, GROUP B, Edgbaston Warwickshire 166-4 beat Middlesex 165 by six wickets (Warwicks 2pts, Middlesex 0pts)
Tim Ambrose dives to his left to dismiss Phillip Hughes at Edgbaston |
Tim Ambrose claimed a Warwickshire one-day wicketkeeping record as the Bears cruised to a six-wicket FP Trophy victory over Middlesex at Edgbaston. Ambrose claimed seven victims, with five catches and two stumpings, to beat the previous record of six jointly held by Piran Holloway and Keith Piper. Only Eoin Morgan (62) and Dawid Malan (43) offered any real resistance as Middlesex were dismissed for 165. Then Neil Carter hit a rapid 56 and Ian Bell 60 not out to ease the Bears home. Ambrose, who later struck 22 in Warwickshire's run chase, claimed his first victim from only the third ball of the game when Nick Compton, fresh from his 131 on Monday, edged Chris Woakes behind for a duck. He then twice combined with Boyd Rankin as star batsmen Owais Shah and Phillip Hughes were both caught behind as Middlesex slumped to 13-3. | Warwickshire one-day wicketkeeper dismissals 7 - Tim Ambrose (v Middx, 12 May 2009) 6 - Piran Holloway (v Hants, 14 June 1992) 6 - Keith Piper (v Leics, 13 August 2003) 5 - Geoff Humpage (v Leics, 12 May 1988) 5 - Keith Piper (v Durham, 12 May 2002) 5- Keith Piper (v Kent, 15 August 2004) 5 - Tony Frost (v Scotland, 29 May 2005) 5 - Michael Barnes (v Lancashire, 29 April 2007) 5 - Tim Ambrose (v Leics, 20 May 2007) |
Morgan and Malan rallied, but Ambrose had victims four and five when Malan and Neil Dexter were both stumped off Ant Botha in quick succession. His chances of playing a part in all 10 wickets were over when Botha caught Ben Scott off spinner Jeetan Patel. But he was back on the scorecard for wickets seven and eight, catching both Shaun Udal and Chris Silverwood off Neil Carter. Warwickshire's run chase got off to a blistering start, with Carter blasting eight fours and two sixes in his 45-ball innings. Indeed, the Bears' problems were all of their own making as both Jonathan Trott and Jim Troughton were run out. But Bell signed off for England duty with a carefully crafted half-century as they sealed victory with more than 14 overs to spare to leapfrog Middlesex into third in Group B.
