Martin Van Jaarsveld hit a second century in three County Championship innings as Kent batted throughout the day against Essex at Chelmsford.
Kent skipper Van Jaarsveld (102) put on 124 for the second wicket with James Tredwell (79), while Darren Stevens weighed in with an unbeaten 74.
That left Kent 226 in front having been made to follow on when bowled out on Thursday for 205.
Kent closed on 391-5, with James Hockley also still there on 33.
Essex skipper Mark Pettini told BBC Essex:

"There's a lot of cricket still left in this game.
"If we can get a couple of early ones in the morning and bowl them out in the session we can be confident of getting a result in two sessions."
