COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Canterbury: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Kent 282, Glamorgan 27-1 (Kent 2 pts, Glamorgan 3pts) 6-9 May 2009 (Play starts 1100 BST)
Sam Northeast only played due to Joe Denly's pre-match migraine |
Teenagers Wayne Parnell and Sam Northeast dug Kent out of the mire on the opening day against Glamorgan. The hosts twice collapsed, just before lunch then again soon after tea, in amassing an all-out total of 282. But, in between, Parnell (90) and fellow 19-year-old Northeast (87) both came close to maiden first-class tons. Glamorgan, for whom Adam Shantry took 3-54, then lost opener Gareth Rees in reaching 27-1 by the close at Canterbury. Former Harrow School prodigy Northeast was only included in the starting XI for his County Championship debut after Joe Denly went down with a migraine during the pre-match warm-up. Northeast might have gone to the third ball of the day had Garnett Kruger held a low, running chance at long leg off a top-edged pull. But he stayed to help skipper Robert Key make good use of a quick and surprisingly lively track at the St Lawrence Ground as they posted 50 inside 61 balls. It was an inspired spell of left-arm swing bowling from Shantry which altered the course of Kent's morning, the Bristol-born former Warwickshire quickie bagging three wickets for just one run in nine balls. Key (25) was snared by an in-swinger, and Geraint Jones was trapped on the crease by another darting in-ducker next ball. Then, in Shantry's next over, Martin van Jaarsveld also shuffled across to become the third lbw victim. | WAYNE PARNELL (born Port Elizabeth 30/7/89), playing his seventh first-class match SAM NORTHEAST (born Ashford 16/10/89), playing only his second first-class match |
The home collapse gathered momentum when Darren Stevens, soon after being hit on the glove by a vicious Kruger lifter, ran himself out attempting a suicidal single to Jamie Dalrymple at mid-on. It transpired that Stevens had fractured the forefinger of his left hand and will be out for a month. To make matters worse for Kent, James Hockley then had his off stump pegged back by Kruger, as the home side lunched uneasily on 96-5. Northeast then added 47 for the sixth wicket with James Tredwell before, just 13 short of a deserved century, being caught behind, tempted by a fuller, wider ball from Kruger. But Tredwell (59) upped the scoring rate in tandem with number eight Parnell, who helped him add 151 before clattering a return catch to Robert Croft, who sparked a collapse in which Kent lost their last four wickets in nine balls without addition. South African Parnell, who took 4-78 and hit 69 on his debut against Essex last week, again improved his first-class best to finish on 90. And, clearly angered at missing just 10 short of a century, Parnell then bowled with hostility down the Nackington Road slope, accounting for Rees in his third over to a sharp slip catch by Hockley.
