COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Canterbury Kent v Northants 21-24 April (Play starts 1100 BST) CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY TWO Northants 355, Kent 257-3 (Northants 4pts, Kent 5 pts)
Geraint Jones hit a quickfire century to help put Kent on top in their County Championship opener against Northants. The former England wicketkeeper hit a six and 16 fours as he plundered 103 off 116 balls. With Martin Van Jaarsveld (70 no) and Darren Stevens (46 no) also in the runs, Kent ended the day on 257-3. Earlier, Northants had added just 87 more runs to their overnight score in being bowled out for 355, Azhar Mahmood finishing with figures of 4-73. Nicky Boje, on 77 overnight, failed to make it to three figures, being caught behind - one of four victims for Jones - on 98. But Boje's fellow South African Van Jaarsveld will be hoping not to fall short of a century himself when they resume for day three. After putting on 92 with Jones for the third wicket, Van Jaarsveld, Kent's leading run scorer last summer, has so far put on a further 78 for the unbroken fourth-wicket partnership with Stevens.
