Bell lost his place in the England team on the recent tour of the West Indies

England batsman Ian Bell hit 84 not out as Warwickshire took the advantage against Somerset on the opening day of the County Championship season.

Bell shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 123 with Jim Troughton (58) to leave the visitors 189-3 at the close.

Earlier Ben Phillips (3-51) struck twice in successive deliveries to remove Darren Maddy and Jonathan Trott and reduce Warwickshire to 66-3.

Only 54 overs were bowled on a day that was shortened by rain and bad light.
