COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division Two, Derby (close, day three): Derbyshire 188 & 431 v Gloucestershire 222 & 118-2
Gloucestershire must make history if they are to win a Championship match for the first time this season after Derbyshire set them a target of 398. That would be Gloucestershire's highest ever fourth innings total, beating the
392-4 against Yorkshire in 1948. By the close on day three they were in decent enough shape, on 118-2. But with 280 still needed, the smart money is on Derbyshire to clinch their fourth victory of the season after they batted through until tea on Friday. Greg Smith, Tom New and Graham Wagg all made half-centuries on a pitch that had flattened out from the first day when 16 wickets fell. And a total of 431 from an overnight 193-4 constitued a very favourable result for the hosts at Derby.
