Notts face tense final-day chase

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Taunton, day three (close): Somerset 106 & 335 v Nottinghamshire 230 & 63-3

Nottinghamshire ended the third day of their Division One game against Somerset on 63-3, needing a further 149 runs to win a tense match at Taunton.

Notts eventually bowled the hosts out for 335 in their second innings, leaving them a target of 212 to win.

Justin Langer (73) and Marcus Trescothick (81) top scored for Somerset while Andre Adams took 3-51.

Notts lost Matt Wood, Bilal Shafayat and Mark Wagh as Alfonso Thomas (2-12) took two late wickets for Somerset.

Somerset resumed their first innings on 114-0 and Notts quickly made the crucial breakthrough as Charlie Shreck (3-71) had Langer caught by Graeme Swann.

Trescothick, who hit 12 fours and a six in his innings, then fell to Adams and when Darren Pattinson and Swann struck twice each, Somerset were in real trouble on 230-6.

But the tail wagged in style with Peter Trego (26), Thomas (22), Steffan Jones (26) and Andy Caddick (20) all chipping in with some hugely valuable contributions.

When Adams had Caddick caught by Shreck, Notts - who lost top spot earlier in the day when Durham beat Kent - knew they had to score 212 to win the match.

Shafayat was the first to go, cutting Jones' first ball of the innings straight to James Hildreth at point to fall for 10.

Wood (24) and Wagh (13) steadied the ship before the former was given out slashing at a wide one and Wagh was bowled, beaten for pace as Thomas struck twice to set up an intriguing final day.
