COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Taunton, day one (close): Somerset 106, Notts 185-6
A green Taunton wicket saw 16 wickets fall on day one, as Notts closed 79 ahead at 185-6 having bowled out Somerset for 106 inside 40 overs. Pitch inspector John Jameson made it clear there was no question of him reporting the surface, citing swing and poor batting for most of the wickets. Justin Langer was lbw to an inswinger and Marcus Trescothick was the first of four Darren Pattinson victims. Mark Wagh hit a six and six fours in 46 in reply but Notts also struggled. Only two runs were on the board when Somerset's powerhouse opening combination were both back in the pavilion. Mark Ealham took a fine low catch to his left in the gully to dismiss Trescothick, as Pattinson bowled superbly in tandem with Andre Adams, making full use of the overcast conditions. When the home side took the field somewhat earlier than they had planned, Andy Caddick removed former Somerset batsman Matt Wood, who was caught at first slip for a duck. Wagh pulled Peter Trego for six but in the same over chipped to square-leg, where Alfonso Thomas took an excellent catch. New England one-day all-rounder Samit Patel was the pick of the batsmen on a difficult day, reaching the only fifty from 72 balls. He hit seven fours but fell for 56 when his cut carried to to third man.
