Openers launch Somerset fightback

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP Division One, Taunton, day two (close): Somerset 106 & 114-0 v Nottinghamshire 230

Somerset openers Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick made an unbeaten 114 to haul their side back into contention on day two against Notts at Taunton.

Chris Read finished 74 not out as the visitors added 45 to their overnight score, Peter Trego (4-54) helping bowl them out for 230 and a lead of 124.

But Langer and Trescothick reduced Notts' advantage to just 10 runs before rain prevented play after tea.

Langer (60no) and Trescothick (50no) lead Somerset to the close on 114-0.

The hosts owed much to the early work of seamers Alfonso Thomas (3-48) and Trego.

Mark Ealham, Andre Adams and Darren Pattinson were removed for the addition of only eight to the overnight total.

Thomas had Ealham caught behind by Craig Kieswetter for a duck off the second ball of the day and later had Pattinson picked up by Langer at first slip, also without scoring.

In between those dismissals Adams was well caught by a back-tracking Ian Blackwell at mid-on for another duck to give Trego his fourth wicket.

It would have been worse for Notts if Steffan Jones had held a catch offered by Read on 44 at deep mid-wicket off Thomas with the total on 197.

Read went on to post a valuable half-century off 63 balls before Charl Willoughby ended the innings by pinning Charlie Shreck lbw with a rasping inswinger.

Langer, visibly frustrated by Read's obstinacy, took his frustration out on the Notts attack, as he and Trescothick raced to 50 in eight overs.

Overcast conditions persisted, but the Notts attack could not summon up the penetration of the first day as the batsmen revelled.

There was concern for Notts when Read dislocated his thumb attempting to take an Ealham delivery that that nipped back off the seam.

The wicketkeeper was replaced by Bilal Shafayat behind the stumps, but is expected to be fit to don the gloves on day three.
