Yorkshire launch Twenty20 appeal

Yorkshire celebrate

Yorkshire will appeal against their expulsion from the Twenty20 Cup for fielding an ineligible player.

Pakistan-born Azeem Rafiq, 17, played against Nottinghamshire in June, but he had not been registered for the first team and does not hold a UK passport.

Nottinghamshire, who lost to the Tykes by nine wickets, have been reinstated and will face Durham in the last eight.

An England and Wales Cricket Board hearing is set to take place on Monday 14 July in Taunton at 1430 BST.

"The club feel that the punishment is manifestly disproportionate to the offence and as such feels duty-bound on behalf of its players, members and staff to lodge an appeal," read a Yorkshire statement.

Yorkshire had been given a deadline of 1700 BST on Friday to decide whether to pursue the matter any further after the original ruling was made at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Rafiq, a talented off-spinner who has captained England Under-15s and Under-16s, holds a Pakistani passport, which means he qualifies as an overseas player.

But Yorkshire had not deregistered Pakistan international Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, which meant Rafiq, who conceded 18 runs off his two overs against Notts, was ineligible to play as counties are only allowed to field one overseas player.

The ECB's Discipline Commission Appeal Panel will be chaired by lawyer David Gabbitass, alongside Chris Tickle, Alan Wadey, Mike Smith and Cliff Pocock at Somerset's County Ground.

The most likely date for the quarter-final is now 20 July, just six days before finals day at the Rose Bowl when the winners would take on Middlesex.

Captain Darren Gough said he had no doubt his county would appeal against the decision.

"I'm distraught to be honest. I've spoken to a few players and we're all very disappointed about the decision," Gough told BBC Radio 5 Live.

The stakes are higher than ever in this year's tournament with the two finalists from the Twenty20 to be entered into cricket's first Champions League tournament in September, with enormous prize money on offer.

"I'm retiring at the end of the year and I'm gutted," added Gough.

"We were playing very well in this competition and financially the boys could miss out hugely."

The quarter-final between Durham and Yorkshire was postponed by the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) shortly before Monday's scheduled 1740 BST start after doubts over Rafiq's eligibility surfaced.

Durham are unhappy about having to play the proposed extra game against Nottinghamshire in an already crowded schedule, with particular doubts over the availability of Shaun Pollock and Albie Morkel.

"Obviously this requirement to rearrange and play a quarter-final causes us a significant competitive disadvantage if we are not able to field the same team that would have played on Monday," said Durham chief executive David Harker.

"But we will be considering our options and looking at when that quarter-final might take place.

"It appears we have suffered at the hands of Yorkshire's misdemeanour."

But Notts chief executive Derek Brewer, on the other hand, was delighted to see his side reinstated.

"We didn't make any expectations but we put our arguments forward well - we now have a quarter-final to look forward to," he said.

In a statement, the ECB said: "In coming to their decision the panel took the view that this was a serious breach of the regulations and could not be passed over as a clerical error.

"In reaching their decision the panel accepted there was no deliberate flouting of the regulations, but all counties are aware of the need to ensure compliance with them.

"The panel find that Yorkshire were aware, no later than early 2007, that there were questions as to (Rafiq's) status and were, therefore, put on notice to check his eligibility.

"This was not done even though on 27 June 2008 the player was making his debut."
