Durham chief fears match backlog

Albie Morkel
Morkel may not figure in the rest of Durham's Twenty20 campaign

Durham chief executive David Harker has expressed fears of a fixture backlog following Monday's postponed Twenty20 game with Yorkshire at the Riverside.

With finals day on the 26 July, Harker is worried that if Durham are pressed into replays it could cause problems for coach Geoff Cook and his squad.

"The cricket season is pretty full on, if we're not playing we're travelling," he told BBC Radio Newcastle.

"Between now and finals day there won't be many opportunities to play."

Harker is also disappointed that their overseas players, Albie Morkel and Shaun Pollock, have had their involvement in the competition delayed.

"We don't know who we'll be playing and we don't know when we'll be playing," he said.

"We've invested quite a bit in getting Albie Morkel and Shaun Pollock to really boost our Twenty20 chances.

"We don't know if they're going to be available depending upon when the fixture is.

"We've got a lot of issues with the solution, which is that Yorkshire will play Nottinghamshire again and we will play the winners at some undecided point in the future."

Monday's quarter-final tie at the Riverside was postponed after it was alleged Yorkshire's 17-year-old spinner Azeem Rafiq was an ineligible player and had played in their previous Twenty20 group match with Nottingham.

In a club statement Durham have confirmed they will appeal to receive a bye into the finals day.

The statement reads: "Durham County Cricket Club is hugely concerned at last night's events partly because of the potential direct financial consequences but, more importantly, the damage to the reputation of Durham CCC and cricket, as a whole.

"Durham CCC will argue to ECB that we should be able to proceed to finals day without having to replay a quarter-final in what is already a very busy playing and travelling schedule."
