In-form Durham beat Yorkshire inside three days at Headingley to become the first team to secure three wins in the County Championship this season. The victory left the two sides level on points, Durham with a match in hand. Well behind on first innings, Yorkshire resumed on 88-2 on Tuesday, needing a huge score to put pressure on Durham. Michael Vaughan (72) and Adam Lyth's 80 gave them a sniff, but a collapse left Durham chasing just 111, and they lost only two wickets as they won the match. Meanwhile, fast bowlers Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard - ditched by England in New Zealand last winter - made the right impression in front of watching selector Geoff Miller. Harmison's 12-over burst in the morning brought him the crucial wickets of Vaughan and talented left-hander Lyth. Hoggard then became the centre of attention for a while by grabbing two wickets in five balls via outside edges as Durham slipped to 8-2. But the visitors were rushed to their modest target by Michael Di Venuto (65no) and Paul Collingwood (44no) - who took part in an unbroken century stand. When Vaughan was 59, Durham appealed confidently for a catch to wicketkeeper Phil Mustard off Harmison. But umpire Peter Hartley did not need to give a verdict because three fielders were behind square on the leg-side. But Harmison plugged away and Lyth eventually helped a rising ball into Mustard's gloves. Vaughan survived a definite chance on 66 when off-spinner Paul Wiseman saw him put down by Callum Thorp at deep mid-wicket. It did not prove to be too expensive a miss because Harmison shattered his stumps with a straight ball which kept low, England's Test captain departing after striking 11 boundaries. Thorp (5-71) and Liam Plunkett (3-49) then cut through Yorkshire's lower order in swift fashion, leaving Durham with a reasonably straightforward chase.
