County Championship D1, Headingley, day one (close): Yorkshire 184 v Durham 59-3 Match scorecard
England one-day captain Paul Collingwood had a mixed day as Durham closed 125 behind Yorkshire at 59-3 after the first day at Headingley. Test captain Michael Vaughan edged behind for an 18-ball duck after the Tykes were put in on an overcast day. Collingwood soon brought the innings to an end with the wickets of Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard within three balls. But he then drove Adil Rashid's fifth ball loosely and was caught for five by Hoggard running in from long-off. Vaughan faced Callum Thorp for all 18 of his deliveries and could not find his rhythm, finally getting an edge as he pushed forward outside off-stump. Liam Plunkett came into the attack to have Jacques Rudolph caught at second slip, then ended a stand of 33 between Anthony
McGrath and Adam Lyth by getting McGrath lbw with one which shot through low. A downpour during the lunch interval meant
play could not resume until an early tea had been taken, and 21 overs
were cut from the day's schedule. Lyth and Andrew Gale added 58 together in 14 overs when the latter fell lbw to Plunkett
for 33, while Lyth departed for 40 in the following over as his edge at Thorp was
deflected off Phil Mustard's gloves into Collingwood's hands at first slip. Steve Harmison ended a stand of 57 in 13 overs when Rashid edged an awkward rising ball to third slip, as the final five wickets fell for 18 runs in five overs. Durham then lost Michael di Venuto to the second ball of the innings from Hoggard, while Tim Bresnan ousted Will Smith with a brutal delivery that was taken at second slip. Hoggard's well-judged catch running round behind the bowler to dismiss Collingwood meant the opening day ended on a fairly even keel.
