County Championship D1, Headingley, day two (close): Yorkshire 184 & 88-2 v Durham 347 Match scorecard
A Durham record eighth-wicket stand between Phil Mustard and Liam Plunkett put them firmly in charge of their Division One match against Yorkshire. The pair piled up 143 in 34 overs to overtake the previous best of 134 between Anderson Cummins and David Graveney against Warwickshire in 1994. Mustard was finally out for 92, but Plunkett remained unbeaten on 68 as Durham made 347 - a lead of 163 runs. In reply, Yorkshire were 88-2, England captain Michael Vaughan 48 not out. Yorkshire were hoping for a positive start but were rocked by the early dismissals of Jacques Rudolph and Anthony McGrath. However, Vaughan, opening the batting for the hosts, showed glimpses of his best form - smashing delightful cover drives on his way to eight boundaries in his 52-ball score - and put on 75 with Adam Lyth, who was unbeaten on 33. Before that, though, Mustard and Plunkett - both hopeful of returning to an England set-up that has just been put to the sword by New Zealand in the one-dayers - lit up the day's play. Durham began the day on 59-3 and they lost three more wickets during the morning session due to careless strokes. In fact, when Paul Wiseman played on to leave Durham 161-7, it looked like Yorkshire might be able to defend their measly first-innings total of 184. But wicketkeeper Mustard smashed 92 off 110 balls with 16 fours and a six, while Plunkett's 138-ball stand brought six boundaries, as the pair put Durham firmly in the driving seat. The main consolation for Yorkshire was that paceman Tim Bresnan's figures of 5-94 were his best since July 2006, when he grabbed 5-58 against the same opponents at the Riverside.
