White's ton sinks Gloucestershire

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Wantage Road
Day four: Northants 329 & 292-4 beat Gloucestershire 475 & 142
by six wickets
Points: Northants 19, Gloucestershire 8

Rob White hit an unbeaten 132 off 156 balls as Northants came from behind to beat Gloucestershire by six wickets.

It was a tremendous result for the home side, who had trailed by 146 runs on first innings, and left Gloucestershire rooted to the bottom of the table.

Left-armers David Lucas (5-30) and Nicky Boje (4-32) did the damage as Gloucestershire were all out for 142.

Their collapse left Northants facing a target of 289 and White struck a six and 18 fours to see them home.

Gloucestershire never really recovered from the loss of their last six wickets for 27 runs in 12 overs at the start of play, having resumed on 115-4.

A combination of spin and seam did the damage with Northants skipper Boje removing overnight pair Chris Taylor (34) and Hamish Marshall (46) and taking a return catch from Mark Gitsham, before Lucas finished off the tail.

Stephen Peters and Niall O'Brien gave Northants a solid start to their run-chase with a half-century partnership, but then departed in quick succession as Peters was caught at gully off Anthony Ireland for 34 and O'Brien was lbw to Gitsham's leg-spin for 22.

David Sales (29) add 64 for the third wicket before being trapped leg-before by former England seamer Jon Lewis, leaving Boje to join White in what proved to be the match-winning stand.

They took the score from 124-3 to 270-3, with White reaching his first Championship hundred of the summer off 125 balls, before Boje was run out by Mark Hardinges for 59.

But White was unmoved and struck the winning runs with 13 overs to spare.
