Northants were made to suffer on day two at Wantage Road as Gloucestershire built a commanding first-innings lead.

Half-centuries by Steven Snell, Mark Hardinges and Jon Lewis helped the visitors post a mammoth total of 475.

Spinner Nicky Boje found some joy with 3-87 but Northants were made to pay for a series of fielding errors.

Wicket-keeper Niall O'Brien hit 53 as Northants began their reply brightly, but Alex Gidman struck twice to leave them on 135-3 at stumps.

O'Brien hit a series of boundaries but eventually went to a spectacular one-handed catch by William Porterfield.

O'Brien's fellow opener Stephen Peters was left 49 not out at stumps, partnered at the crease by night-watchman David Lucas (9 not out).
