Yorks beat Somerset to move top

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton
Day four: Somerset 258 & 282 lost to Yorkshire 372 & 208 by 40 runs

Points: Yorkshire 21, Somerset 5

Yorkshire replaced Somerset at the top of the County Championship First Division after they secured victory with 23 balls remaining at Taunton.

The home side began the final day on 12 without loss, needing a further 311 to win, but plunged to 54-4.

Zander de Bruyn gave them hope with his first Somerset century and Ian Blackwell contributed a defiant 64.

But they were dismissed 40 runs short of their target with three wickets each for Matthew Hoggard and Tim Bresnan.

It was poor top order batting that cost the hosts.

Openers Marcus Trescothick and Neil Edwards threw away their wickets in similar style, pulling catches to David Wainwright at deep square off short-pitched balls from Bresnan.

It was 36-3 when Hoggard trapped James Hildreth lbw to for two and Justin Langer soon followed, caught at slip by Jacques Rudolph attempting to run a delivery from Steve Patterson to third man.

The scoreboard read 54-4 but Blackwell survived a sharp chance to Rudolph at slip on eight and by lunch he and De Bruyn had taken the score to 115 without further loss.

Blackwell's 54-ball half-century threatened to turn the tide but the visitors remained favourites when Hoggard had the left-hander caught behind for 64, prodding at a good length ball.

From 142-5, De Bruyn and Craig Kieswetter combined for a century partnership in 32 overs, the second fifty coming from 12 overs.

Just when they looked to have swung things Somerset's way, Kieswetter was pinned lbw by Patterson on the back foot for 41.

When Hoggard took the second new ball the target was down to 73 with 21 overs left but he quickly bowled Ben Phillips middle stump for seven.

De Bruyn went on to his first century for Somerset, off 214 balls, and a draw looked the favourite when Alfonso Thomas shut up shop.

However, Adil Rashid broke through his defence with six overs left and 46 still needed.

Somerset's chance had gone and De Bruyn's brave innings ended with a perfectly pitched leg-break from Rashid.

Bresnan then ended a memorable contest by bowling Andy Caddick off his pads, sparking wild celebrations among his colleagues.
