COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION ONE, Taunton Somerset v Yorkshire 339-6
Rudolph controlled his innings well before falling late in the day |
Yorkshire's Jacques Rudolph hit a century to put Division One leaders Somerset on the back foot at Taunton. The former South Africa Test batsman was the star of the opening day with an innings of 155, before he became one of three victims for Ian Blackwell. Rudolph registered century stands with Andrew Gale (61) and Gerard Brophy (70) to guide the visitors to 315-3. But three late wickets helped Somerset limit Yorkshire to 339-6 and in danger of squandering their strong position. It was a tough day for Andrew Caddick on his first appearance of the season against county opposition following a shoulder problem, as the former England star finished with 0-70 from 16 overs. Charl Willoughby fared little better on a batsman-friendly pitch, though he snared the first wicket when Adam Lyth edged a loose drive to Neil Edwards at second slip. Stand-in skipper Anthony McGrath was the second to fall when he foolishly cut a wide ball from Ben Phillips straight to Alfonso Thomas on the deep point boundary. Rudolph enjoyed a some good fortune on 59 when Marcus Trescothick failed to hold a running chance at mid-on off Caddick's bowling. But the visitors lost their third wicket when Gale was bowled misjudging the flight of a Blackwell delivery. Somerset skipper Justin Langer delayed taking the new ball - and his decision was rewarded when Blackwell had Brophy adjudged leg before. The Tykes wicket-keeper had looked in excellent touch during his stay at the crease before his dismissal. Rudolph went to 150 off 266 balls, with a six and 15 fours, before edging a catch behind to give Blackwell his third wicket. And Somerset struck once again when Adil Rashid fell lbw to Zander de Bruyn at 335-6. The home side will have a new ball available in the morning as it was not taken until the final over of the day by Willoughby.
