County Championship D1, Rose Bowl, day three: Sussex 212 & 262 bt Hampshire 168 & 211 by 94 runs
Sussex 18 pts, Hampshire 3 Mushtaq turned the match on the third afternoon |
Pakistan spin wizard Mushtaq Ahmed ripped through Hampshire with 7-64 to inspire Sussex to a 94-run victory. The wily veteran ended a defiant stand of 67 between Michael Carberry and Dominic Thornely, as the home side slid from 144-3 to 211 all out.
Earlier, Sussex lost skipper Chris Adams, who did not add to his overnight 31, but Robin Martin-Jenkins ensured they would set a tough target of 306.
The all-rounder struck a commanding 91 before he top-edged a hook.
To complete a wretched day for Hampshire, Chris Tremlett limped off with an ankle injury after bowling only three balls and is doubtful for the England A match against Sri Lanka next week.
Martin-Jenkins eclipsed his highest score of last season and the highest of this low-scoring match, but fell short of a century when his flaying edge presented a simple catch to James Bruce at point.
With Thornely striking the ball cleanly, Hampshire scented victory with a further 162 needed and seven wickets intact, but Carberry played onto his stumps for 39.
Mushtaq tore through the middle order, bowling Shaun Udal round his legs to capture his sixth wicket, and though Tremlett hit him out of the ground and added another six, he was soon trapped lbw for the spinner's fifth lbw.
