Kent triumph despite Ganguly ton
County Championship D1, Sophia Gardens, day three: Kent 568 & 51-0 beat Glamorgan 358 & 260 by 10 wickets
Kent 22 pts, Glamorgan 6

Kent inflicted Glamorgan's sixth defeat in seven Championship games despite Sourav Ganguly's superb 142 at Cardiff.

Forced to follow on after being bowled out for 358 in their first innings, the home side were reduced to 5-3 by an inspired spell from Amjad Khan.

Andrew Hall took 4-38 but Ganguly hit five sixes and 15 fours and shared a 10th wicket stand of 80 with Andrew Davies (35) before he was last man out.

Needing just 51 to win, Kent knocked off the runs without loss in 7.5 overs.

Glamorgan were always going to face an uphill task after Kent made 568 and the prospect of having to bat twice in succession loomed large after Ganguly and David Hemp were both dismissed for 69.

Ganguly edged a ball from Martin Saggers to keeper Niall O'Brien, who also took the catch to dismiss Hemp off Khan.

Robert Croft hung around for almost two hours for his 45 before falling to the left-arm spin of Min Patel and there were useful contributions of 25 and 26 from Mark Wallace and Darren Thomas.

But they were all out 210 in arrears and Khan tightened Kent's grip on the game when he took the new ball.

Daniel Cherry was caught at slip by Martin van Jaarsveld for nought and Hemp and Michael Powell were bowled to leave Glamorgan in disarray.

Matthew Elliott was caught behind off Saggers for eight and when Hall removed Wallace for three, the home side were 34-5 and facing humiliation.

Croft made 33 off 32 balls but it was Thomas who provided the main support for Ganguly, making 17 in an hour as they put on 100 for the seventh wicket.

Their partnership was ended by Hall, who bowled Thomas and followed up with the wickets of David Harrison and Dean Cosker.

But Davies struck seven boundaries in a display which belied his position at 11 in the order and Ganguly showed his class with a series of dazzling shots to reach his first century for Glamorgan off exactly 100 balls.

He was finally caught off medium pacer Darren Stevens and the umpires agreed to an extension to enable Kent openers David Fulton (25) and Rob Key (24) to knock off the runs.
