County Championship D1, Sophia Gardens: Glamorgan 175-3 v Kent 568 (day two, stumps) Van Jaarsveld hit the highest score of the season so far |
Martin van Jaarsveld had Kent records tumbling with an awesome unbeaten 262 in his team's 558 against Glamorgan.
The Welsh county replied with 175-3 in a testing initial quest to avoid the follow-on target of 419.
Van Jaarsveld, on 174 overnight, completed his double hundred from 329 balls, with 26 fours.
His innings was the highest by a Kent batsman against Glamorgan and his stand of 159 with Min Patel a new Kent eighth wicket record against any county.
Patel was dropped at slip off Dean Cosker on 62, but after Robert Croft took two quick wickets, Glamorgan struggled to take the last one as van Jaarsveld and Martin Saggers added a further 77.
Glamorgan were soon in trouble when key man Matthew Elliott was run out in a mix-up with David Hemp, who atoned somewhat in an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 96 in 20 overs with India skipper Sourav Ganguly.
"I was pretty much there to do the anchor role, with the other guys playing around me," van Jaarsveld said afterwards.
"I batted with a bit more freedom towards the end of the innings - it was nice to personal best."
