Yorkshire relegated
Steve Kirby
Steve Kirby had a fruitless day with the ball
County Championship, D1, Edgbaston, final day. Warwickshire 601-9 dec and 231-4 bt Yorkshire 351 & 481 by six wickets

Yorkshire fans had their worst nightmares finally confirmed when they were relegated to the lower tier of the domestic championship.

Needing a win to have any chance of avoiding the drop, Yorkshire were given hope with a defiant last-morning partnership between captain Richard Blakey and Gary Fellows.

But they collapsed in the post-lunch session.

Warwickshire were eventually set 232 to win, which they knocked off with ease with wickets in hand.

The day began with Yorkshire just 51 runs ahead of the home side with five second innings wickets in hand.

Blakey and Fellows then settled into an admirable 175-run partnership which was finally ended on the stroke of lunch when Alan Richardson bowled Fellows for 88.

The rest of the batting then fell apart as Jamie Spires collected five wickets to add to the four he took in the first innings.

Blakey was the penultimate man to be dismissed, his 211-minute vigil ended by Richardson after he had hit 108.

In Warwickshire's run chase, Michael Powell and Mark Wagh put on 175 for the first wicket at a good rate before Wagh fell to Matt Elliott's slow bowling 10 short of a century.

Dougie Brown fell lbw to Richard Dawson for 17 before Ian Bell's woeful season continued when he also fell cheaply to the England off-spinner.

With three runs needed, Dominic Ostler also fell to Dawson, but it was scant consolation as Frost came in to hit the winning runs.

Captain Powell finished on 92 not out.
