Hope fades for Yorkshire
Dougie Brown spills a sharp chance
Spinners dominated the third day at Edgbaston
County Championship, D1, Edgbaston, day three of four: Warwickshire 601-9 dec; Yorkshire 351 & 301-5

Yorkshire's division one status hung by a thread on Saturday after they failed to achieve maximum batting points against Warwickshire.

The Tykes need eleven points to give themselves a mathematical chance of survival going into the last match but after being bowled out for 351, they now need an unlikely win.

Asked to follow-on by Warwickshire skipper Mike Powell, Yorkshire reached 301 for five, by the close a slender lead of 54.

Their only hope is for quick runs on Sunday in the hope that they can then bowl Warwickshire out in a run chase.

Yorkshire began the day on 261 for six in their first innings with captain Richard Blakey and Richard Dawson at the wicket.

Together the pair stretched their seventh wicket partnership to 93 before Blakey was dismissed by part-time off-spinner Mark Wagh.

That brought about a clatter of wickets with Wagh completing his maiden first-class wicket haul, before Dawson was the last man out having made exactly 50.

Batting again Yorkshire shrugged off the early loss of Vic Craven as Matthew Elliott and Anthony McGrath put on an impressive partnership worth 172 for the second wicket.

With a slender hope beginning to grow Yorkshire were slapped down once more by Warwickshire as four wickets fell for 50 runs.

First McGrath departed for 66 with Craig White following him soon after for just two.

All three wickets had fallen to Jamie Squires but Wagh then made his impact, bowling Michael Lumb for eleven.

He also picked up the wicket of Elliott, with the Australian eventually falling for 127, his first championship hundred for Yorkshire.

Gary Fellows and Blakey held Warwickshire at bay though, adding a further 43 before the close.
