Surrey unveil new star
Ali Brown
Brown hit his fourth Championship ton of 2002
County Championship, D1, day two of four, The Oval: Hampshire 190 v Surrey 410-5

Ali Brown struck an unbeaten century and debutant Scott Newmann narrowly missed out on one as Surrey dominated day two against Hampshire.

At stumps, the Division One leaders held a commanding 220-run lead on 410 for five.

Brown finished the day unbeaten on 103 after playing a typically aggressive knock, but the find of the day was Newman.

The 22-year-old right-handed opener fell painfully one run short of triple figures, but his innings was one of quality.

Newman shared in 198 runs for the first wicket with Ian Ward, and matched his more-experienced partner in all areas.

After 168 balls, 13 fours and a six, Newman padded up to James Tomlinson and was adjudged leg before wicket.

Ward fell to Shaun Udal four runs later for 87, a fine knock that boasted 10 boundaries and one six.

Nadeem Shahid (22) and Mark Ramprakash (38) both made starts but failed to go on with it, but at the other end Brown was not-so-quietly building an innings.

He faced 116 balls, clubbed eight boundaries and four sixes and, worryingly for Hampshire, will be at the crease, along with Jonathan Batty (36 not out), when play resumes on Saturday.
