Shrewsbury Cricket Club consider move to new ground

London Road has been Shrewsbury's home since the 1950s

Shrewsbury Cricket Club have drawn up plans for a possible move to a new purpose-built out-of-town ground.

The club's committee has canvassed members about selling up and developing new and bigger facilities at Cruckton, five miles from the town centre.

"We need three times as much ground as we have to do what we want," chairman Andy Barnard told BBC Radio Shropshire.

"I know there's a lot of emotional connection with London Road, but we are also here to serve future generations."

Shrewsbury moved to their present London Road base on the town's outskirts in the 1950s.

Their first team are the current Birmingham League champions and have seven other sides as well as a thriving junior section.

"We started looking at regeneration seven years ago, and from that we moved on to look at relocation," said Barnard.

"We've been at our ground for a long time but we need to sustain ourselves through the next 50 years and that means new pitches, new junior and training facilities and a new clubhouse - all of which I know is a big ask."

A consultation period with club members is coming to an end and the committee have insisted they will listen closely to all opinions.

Barnard added: "Clearly there are people who don't want us to move - and initially those were my thoughts too.

"But as I've spent more and more time in the chair I've realised we do need greater facilities to move the club forward."
