Ed Foster's father John was also a Shropshire captain |
Shropshire captain Ed Foster has told his team their Minor Counties Knockout win must act as a springboard for success in the game's three-day format. "Winning the trophy glossed over our finishing third-from-bottom in the league," he told BBC Radio Shropshire. "Many of the games were close calls, but we need to concentrate more. "Perhaps our cup success [over Lincolnshire in the August final] will make us stronger, and also make other teams more wary of us." Shropshire started the 2010 Championship at a blistering pace, thrashing Wiltshire by nine wickets at the start of June, and beating Oxfordshire in their third game. In between they were held to a draw by the Western Division's eventual winners, Dorset, when they were not quite able to bowl out the final two tailenders. "That was a telling moment as I honestly believe we were a better side than Dorset and had we won that one. Who knows what might have happened." As it was, Shropshire then drew with Cornwall and lost to Berkshire and Cheshire to slip down the Championship table. But in the one-day game they were triumphant, winning all seven games, including their memorable seven-wicket win in the final at Durham's Riverside stadium - to get Shropshire's name on the cup for the first time. "I really want us to build on that and to show people what we're really capable of," Foster added. "We're a young side, and I think we can go a long way together." Foster enjoyed a highly successful season as captain of Shrewsbury, who won the Birmingham League premier division title, the League Twenty20, and the Shropshire Twenty20.
