Misbah made an unbeaten 93 |
Misbah-ul-Haq's calm unbeaten 93 helped Pakistan to a two-wicket win over New Zealand with six balls remaining in the fourth one-day international in Napier. He shared 89 with Younus Khan who made 42 before he was run out in the 38th over and three fours in the penultimate over from Sohail Tanvir sealed the win. Earlier James Franklin (62) and Nathan McCullum (53 not out) enabled the Kiwis rally from a slow start to post 262-7. Pakistan now lead the six-match series 2-1 with two games to play. After New Zealand won the toss at McLean Park, late inclusion Franklin top-scored with 62 to guide New Zealand to 262-7. The 30-year-old was added to the line-up shortly before the match began because opening batsman Jesse Ryder withdrew with a finger injury. He shared partnerships of 62 for the sixth wicket with Brendon McCullum and 64 for the seventh with Nathan McCullum, helping to rescue the innings after the Black Caps had slumped from 40-0 to 141-6. Nathan McCullum recorded his maiden half-century in his 17th ODI, and his brother Brendon hit 37 to help Franklin's rebuilding effort. | 606: DEBATE |
Wahab Riaz was Pakistan's most impressive bowler, finishing with figures of 3-51. In reply Misbah scored freely, the 36-year-old recording his 11th ODI fifty from 62 balls and his 93 came from 91 deliveries. The Pakistan Test captain was ably assisted by Younus (42), though he was run out in the 38th over. Umar Akmal then made 10 off 17 balls before he was well caught in the 43rd over by Nathan McCullum off Daniel Vettori, who trapped Shahid Afridi in front two balls later. The initiative swung back to Pakistan when Abdul Razzaq smashed a six from the first ball of the 44th over, bowled by Tim Southee, and took 17 runs from the over. That reduced Pakistan's requirement to 45 from 36 balls with four wickets still in hand. Misbah and Razzaq (23) managed to keep pace with the required run rate and while Razzaq was well caught by Vettori, Misbah smashed 10 runs off two balls from Scott Styris. Tanvir (14) then hit three boundaries off Southee in the next over to guide Pakistan to victory. The fifth match in the series is in Hamilton on Thursday.
