Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq lifts the Test series trophy

Pakistan drew the second Test with New Zealand in Wellington to win the series 1-0 after their run chase fell short on the final day at the Basin Reserve.

Set 274 to win the Test, the tourists finished on 226-5 to wrap up their first Test series win since 2006.

Pakistan lost opener Taufeeq Umar first ball and were soon struggling at 42-3, but Younus Khan (81) and Misbah-ul-Haq (70 not out) steadied the ship.

And Daniel Vettori confirmed that he has quit as the Kiwis' Test captain.

The 31-year-old, who replaced Stephen Fleming as skipper in 2007, will continue to lead the limited-overs side before stepping down after the World Cup, as he had previously indicated.

"I made that decision three-and-a-half years ago and that's it," he said.

"My timing was always to step away after the World Cup and that stays the same."

But Vettori still hopes to remain as a player under the new skipper - with his deputy Ross Taylor most likely to take over.

"Test cricket is part of the game I love, " he said. "I want to play it as long as I can and there are still things I want to achieve."

Skipper Misbah's five-hour resistance ended any hopes that Vettori, who bowled 34 overs of left-arm spin on the final day, had of forcing a home win to square the series for the Black Caps.

Having won the first Test in Hamilton by 10 wickets within three days, it was also Pakistan's first Test series win outside the sub-continent since their triumph in New Zealand in 2003/04.

After Taufeeq was trapped lbw by Tim Southee, his opening partner Mohammad Hafeez appeared to edge Chris Martin to keeper Reece Young.

But umpire Rod Tucker's decision to give Hafeez not out led to some heated exchanges between opposing players during the next few overs.

Azhar Ali was adjudged lbw to Martin and Hafeez (32) edged the same bowler to the slips, leaving experienced pair Younus and Misbah to dig in and take the tourists safely to lunch.

The duo looked like surviving the entire afternoon session, but Younus's patient 155-ball knock was ended just before tea when he edged Southee to Young.

Misbah's unbeaten 70 came from 226 balls, and he was supported well by Asad Shafiq, who made 24 from 85 deliveries before being trapped leg before to become Vettori's only victim of the day.

"I thought Younus played very well, it was a great way to play in a fourth innings on the fifth day," added Vettori.

"He was mainly content to defend and Misbah was very content to defend, so when you're 1-0 up you can play that way and they did it exceptionally well.

"The way they played in Hamilton meant that we had to play catch-up this whole Test and unfortunately we couldn't quite do it at the end."

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis added: "Full credit to them, they're experienced campaigners and they knew exactly what they needed to do."
