Third Test, Nagpur (day four):India 566-8 dec beat New Zealand 193 & 175 by an innings and 198 runs Match scorecard India celebrate after ccompleting an innings win in Nagpur
Harbhajan Singh and Ishant Sharma each took three wickets as India beat New Zealand by an innings and 198 runs in the third Test at Nagpur. The Kiwis were bowled out for 175 soon after lunch as the home side wrapped up a 1-0 series victory. New Zealand slumped from 24-1 to 124-8 during the morning session. Tim Southee (31) and Andy McKay (20 not out) shared a stand of 51 but Ishant bowled Southee and Chris Martin with successive deliveries to end the match. Although Ishant administered the coup de grace, it was Harbhajan who picked up the Player of the Series award after hitting 315 runs, including two centuries, and collecting 10 wickets. "We did not expect the game to end so early," said Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "It was important to start well. We knew the track was turning so we wanted to capitalise on that and take some early wickets. | 606: DEBATE |
"Our spinners got turn and bounce with the new, hard ball in the morning. It was one of those days when everything went to our plans." Harbhajan's spin partner Pragyan Ojha began New Zealand's slide by having Brendon McCullum lbw for 25 and then winning another decision against Martin Guptill with the first ball of his next over. Harbhajan struck his first blow when Gautam Gambhir accepted a bat-pad chance at short leg to send Gareth Hopkins on his way for eight and followed up by removing Ross Taylor for 29 in similar fashion, with substititue Cheteshwar Pujara taking the catch. Ishant bowled Kane Williamson for eight as the wicket continued to tumble and shortly afterwards took a catch at mid-off as Jesse Ryder, on 22, tamely lofted ball from Suresh Raina straight to him. Ryder was later ruled out of the forthcoming one-day series because of a calf muscle injury. New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori was the last man to go before lunch, falling leg-before to Raina for 13. Southee and McKay opted for a positive approach following the resumption, with the former hitting three sixes as they brought up a half-century partnership from only 55 balls. Ishant had the answer, however, hitting the top of Southee's off stump as he tried to swing the ball towards mid-wicket and then producing another straight one to account for Martin, who went for nought for the 29th time in his Test career. "We lost the match with the bat," said New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori. "Winning the toss, batting first and then making only 193 is not something that will win you a Test match. "I thought Sharma was the difference between the two teams. He got three wickets in the second innings, but also four in the first."
