Third Test, Nagpur (day one): New Zealand 148-7 v India Match scorecard
Sreesanth (centre) had the New Zealand top order in all sorts of trouble |
Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum's brave stand was not enough to rescue New Zealand as India dominated the first day of a rain-hit third Test. After rain washed out the first session in Nagpur, the tourists fell to 51-5, as Sreesanth (2-20) and Ishant Sharma (2-32) ripped through the top order. Despite both nursing injuries, Ryder (59) and McCullum (34 not out) fought hard but were always up against it. The tourists ended the day on 148-7 in the decisive final match of the series. McCullum had been forced to go out to bat despite suffering a back injury in the warm-up while Ryder aggravated a niggling calf problem at the crease. Their stand of 42 may not have been the prettiest but prevented an already poor display turning into a total collapse. The problems began when Martin Guptill edged behind off Sreesanth for just six before fellow opener Tim McIntosh was bowled by the same man. Ross Taylor came in and added a brisk 20 off 24 balls, but was then trapped lbw by Sharma to leave New Zealand on 42-3. Kane Williamson was caught at short extra cover by Virender Sehwag for a duck off Pragyan Ojha's bowling, and when captain Daniel Vettori sent a bottom edge on to his own stumps, New Zealand were in serious trouble. Ryder and McCullum then came together and provided some kind of resistance but when the former popped one to Suresh Raina at cover off Harbhajan Singh, New Zealand were back in the mire.
