India have taken control of the third and decisive final Test against New Zealand thanks to impressive displays from their top-order batsmen.

Having bowled out the tourists for 193, Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar all hit half centuries to help India to 292-2.

Gambhir (78) and Sehwag (74) were the two wickets to fall.

Earlier, paceman Ishant Sharma was the pick of the bowlers, taking 4-43 while Pragyan Ojha took 3-57.

New Zealand had started the day on 148-7 and added 11 more runs before Brendon McCullum edged to wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni off a Sharma delivery.

Andy McKay then had his off stump removed by a leg-cutter from Sharma before Tim Southee miscued a Ojha ball and was caught in the deep by Sehwag.

India made a superb start to their innings and were 89 without loss at lunch before Daniel Vettori produced a sharp catch off his own delivery to remove Sehwag.

Gambhir had played a steady innings, with his 78 coming off 127 balls, before he prodded a short one from Southee to Ross Taylor in the slips.

But Dravid and Tendulkar steadied the India ship again as the home side ended the day 99 runs ahead with eight wickets remaining.

The first two matches of the series were drawn.
