Asia Cup, Dambulla: Pakistan 385-7 (50 ovs) beat Bangladesh 246-5 (50 ovs) by 139 runs Match scorecard
Afridi now holds the record for the most ODI sixes, with 272 |
Captain Shahid Afridi hit a one-day international best 124 off 60 balls as Pakistan earned a 139-run victory over Bangladesh in the Asia Cup in Dambulla. With neither side able to reach the final after both lost to India and Sri Lanka, Pakistan piled on a massive total of 385-7 from their 50 overs. But Bangladesh made only 246-5 in reply as Junaid Siddique top-scored with 97. India opener Virender Sehwag has been ruled out of the final with Sri Lanka after suffering a hamstring injury. India face a dead-rubber tie against Sri Lanka in the last group game on 22 June, before they meet two days later in the final. | 606: DEBATE |
But they will be without Sehwag, who sustained his injury during the three-wicket win against Pakistan in the fourth match of the tournament on Saturday. The attacking batsman will be replaced by wicketkeeper/batsman Dinesh Karthik - pending approval from the Asian Cricket Council - for the remainder of the series. Pakistan were always in control of Monday's match at Dambulla with Afridi plundering 17 boundaries and four sixes to post his highest limited-overs score - and his second century of the tournament - while also passing Sanath Jayasuriya's record of 270 ODI sixes. | ONE-DAY INTERNATIONAL SIXES 272 Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) 270 Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) 190 Sourav Ganguly (India) 185 Sachin Tendulkar (India) 165 Chris Gayle (West Indies) |
Imran Farhat (66), Shahzaib Hasan (50) and Umar Akmal (50) hit half centuries as they set a huge target after hammering 120 runs in the last nine overs. And despite Siddique's innings and a decent 66 from opener Imrul Kayes, Bangladesh fell well short of their target, falling to their third loss of the four-nation tournament. Both teams now head to the UK - with Bangladesh returning to play one-day internationals against England, Ireland, Scotland and the Netherlands after losing their two-Test series in England, while Pakistan's tour - which includes Tests and one-dayers against England and Australia - begins with a Twenty20 match against MCC at Lord's on Sunday. Meanwhile, Pakistan have named their squad to tour England, with former captain Younus Khan left out.
