Sehwag shone with the ball but only scored 11 with the bat |
Virender Sehwag starred with the ball as India secured an emphatic six-wicket win over Bangladesh in the second match of the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka. He took four wickets for only six runs with his off-spin to help India dismiss Bangladesh for 167 in 34.5 overs. Bangladesh collapsed from 155-4 and lost their final four wickets in Dambulla without scoring any runs. Sehwag scored only 11 with the bat, but Gautam Gambhir made a steady 82 as India sped to victory in the 31st over. Bangladesh, having won the toss, got off to a flying start when openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes raced to 35 off 2.5 overs before Praveen Kumar made the breakthrough by getting Tamim caught in the covers for 22. | 606: DEBATE |
Bangladesh maintained a steady run rate of nearly six an over until Sehwag was brought into the attack in the 31st over. The part-time bowler had Mushfiqur Rahim caught at the wicket, trapped Suhrawadi Shuvo and Shafiul Islam leg-before and then ended the innings by bowling Syed Rasel. Gambhir, who had to deal with a brief interruption because of bad light, was dropped by Tamin on 48 before falling leg-before with only 10 runs needed for victory. However, India skipper Mahendra Dhoni hit the winning runs to finish unbeaten on 38 and secure a bonus point for winning before the 40th over. "The spinners won it for us," said Dhoni. "It was good we chased a low target because it is very difficult to bat under lights here." Bangladesh will look to bounce back when they face champions Sri Lanka in the next match of the four-nation tournament on Friday. Sri Lanka opened the tournament on Tuesday with a 16-run win over Pakistan.
