New Zealand will press for victory on the final day of the one-off Test in Hamilton after dismissing Bangladesh's top order cheaply on day four.

The Tigers will begin day five on 88-5 in their second innings, chasing an improbable victory target of 404.

Earlier, opener Tim McIntosh led the way with 89 for the Kiwis as they eventually declared on 258-5.

Black Caps skipper Daniel Vettori then took 2-23 as Bangladesh prepared for a rearguard battle.

The hosts had begun the day on 9-1, 154 runs ahead, and lost opener Peter Ingram in the morning session before McIntosh shared stands of 72 with both Ross Taylor (51) and Martin Guptill.

Bangladesh were left to regret lapses in the field when Mohammad Mahmudullah grassed a simple caught-and-bowled chance from McIntosh just after lunch.

Shafiul Islam then dropped both Guptill and McIntosh, fumbling a catch on the boundary as the latter swept Mahmudullah for one of his three sixes.

However, McIntosh then became the third Kiwi batsman of the innings to be run out when he and Guptill were both stranded at one end, while Guptill nearly became the fourth only to be spared by inconclusive television replays.

Guptill, who also hit three sixes, finished on an unbeaten 56 as Vettori, who holed out for 13, called his players in after Brendon McCullum hit a rapid 19 not out.

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal smashed 30 from 19 balls before Vettori made the breakthrough with his left-arm spin.

Despite being hit for six, he enticed Tamim to sky the very next ball to long-off where Daryl Tuffey ran back to take a good catch.

Junaid Siddique (8) then fell to a bizarre dismissal when he gloved a delivery from paceman Chris Martin into the air and it landed on top of the stumps, dislodging the bails.

Aftab Ahmed took 37 balls to score eight before he ran himself out, racing down the pitch for a suicidal single and precipitating a collapse as the Tigers lost three wickets for six runs.

Mohammad Ashraful was trapped lbw by Vettori for two, while Kayes' defiance was ended as he was bowled by off-spinner Jeetan Patel for 29.

Captain Shakib Al Hasan and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim saw Bangladesh through to the close but all-rounder Mahmudullah, who hit a maiden Test century in the first innings, is theironly other remaining recognised batsman as they face a battle to save the game on the final day.

"There are three guys absolutely capable of making a hundred on that wicket out there," said coach Jamie Siddons.

"But it will take something special. We've got three guys, three chances. We need to make at least two centuries to put some respectability back into the game."
