An unbroken century stand from Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum guided New Zealand to 258-5 on the opening day of the one-off Test with Bangladesh.

When skipper Daniel Vettori was out in the 42nd over, the Kiwis were tottering on 158-5, but the in-form Guptill fired 11 fours in his 80 from 154 balls.

He was ably supported by McCullum, in his 50th Test, who struck eight fours in 54 from 71 balls, his 16th fifty.

A damp start and bad light late in the day saw a total of 21.5 overs lost.

The start of the match was delayed for an hour because of wet conditions at Seddon Park, and when Bangladesh skipper Shakib al Hasan won the toss he hoped his bowlers would utilise any moisture that may have been left in the surface.

They obliged and three wickets fell in the morning session, openers Tim McIntosh and BJ Watling caught in the slips, and debutant Peter Ingram also departing early, despite an impressive start.

The 31-year-old from Taranaki hit successive fours through the covers off Rubel Hossain and launched left-arm spinner Shakib down the ground for six but perished on 42 when an attempted pull flew straight to mid-on.

Guptill, who made an assured 91 in the final match of the one-day series, added a career-best Test score in his ninth match but had a difficult spell at the start of his innings.

The 23-year-old survived a referral when the Tigers were convinced he had edged behind, with replays showing he had hit his pad not the ball.

Then, when still to get off the mark, he was put down by Shafiul Islam - who failed to cling on to a difficult return chance.

But he soon found an imperious touch, striking three classical boundaries in succession off Shahadat Hossain, who had earlier been hit for three fours in an over by Ross Taylor.

Rubel frequently troubled Taylor, however, and had him caught behind for 40, before striking Vettori on the pad first ball.

A huge appeal was rejected and the referral did not show enough for TV umpire Simon Taufel to say the decision should be reversed.

606: DEBATE

Vettori made only 10 before he charged down the wicket at Shakib and saw his off-stump knocked back.

McCullum quickly compiled a half century before the Kiwis accepted the offer of the light and, though the players returned for 11 balls, they were soon off again for the day.

Ingram said his side were confident of posting an intimidating total having recovered from their perilous earlier position.

"We'll be looking for 400-450," he said. "The boys will be going out there doing their routines and processes the best they can to try and achieve that.

"There's a positive feeling in the camp. We talked about more guys needing to go on. Hopefully the boys do that and put Bangladesh under pressure."

Of his own form on debut he said: "I'm happy with the way I played until the shot I played when I got out.

"It was a bad decision and bad execution. I felt like I hit balls that were there to be hit and played well until I made a bad decision and I got out.

"Rubel bowled some good heat and you've got to be on top of your game every ball but the wicket is a nice easy pace and good to bat on. I'm pretty gutted I threw it away really."
