Rahim hit 17 fours and a six in his maiden Test century |
A defiant final-day century from Mushfiqur Rahim proved to be in vain as India beat Bangladesh by 113 runs in the first Test in Chittagong. Set a target of 415, Bangladesh resumed on 67-2, but were soon in deeper trouble when Ishant Sharma removed Mohammad Ashraful and Raqibul Hasan. The only meaningful resistance came from Tamim Iqbal (52) and wicketkeeper Rahim, who made 101 from 114 balls. Rahim was the last man out as the hosts were dismissed for 301. Leg-spinner Amit Mishra, who grabbed four second session wickets, was the chief destroyer for India, while Sharma finished with 3-48. | 606: DEBATE |
The hosts were reduced to 136-5 at lunch after Virender Sehwag dismissed Iqbal and Sharma claimed the wickets of Ashraful (27) and Hasan (13). Mishra (4-92) then set to work wrapping up the bulk of the tail. He had Shakib Al Hasan (17) caught by Sehwag at silly point, castled Shahadat Hossain (24) and caught Shafiul Islam (8) off his own bowling. Zaheer Khan claimed the other wicket of Mohammad Mahmudullah (20), who was caught by Dinesh Karthik. "They did not bat well. I think they bowled well in the first innings because the conditions were helping," said Sehwag, India's captain in the absence of the injured Mahendra Singh Dhoni. "But we batted well in the second innings, we put 400 runs on the board. It was difficult for Bangladesh to chase those runs." Rahim, who hit 17 fours and one six in making his first century in Tests, said the first session on the fifth day proved decisive. "We lost the match to a great extent in the first session," he said. "If we could have got through the first session, they would have been under a lot of pressure." India, the number one ranked Test team, can wrap up a series win in the second and final match which begins in Dhaka on Sunday.
