First Test, Chttagong, day two (close): India 243 v Bangladesh 59-3 Match scorecard Tendulkar's debut was in November 1989 and his first ton in August 1990 |
Bangladesh closed 184 adrift on 59-3 after a truncated second day of the first Test with India in Chittagong. Less than 25 overs were possible as foggy conditions left the light unfit but there was time for Sachin Tendulkar to record his 44th Test century. He resumed on 76, moved into the 90's with a six and reached his hundred with successive fours, remaining undefeated on 105 as India were all out for 243. After a fine start The Tigers lost three wickets in the final three overs. This is the sixth Test match between the teams and India's total of 243 is their lowest first-innings score against Bangladesh. After a delayed start because of dense fog, India resumed with two wickets intact and Tendulkar decided to accelerate while he could, pulling Shahadat Hossain over square-leg to the boundary in the opening over. Tendulkar danced down the wicket to loft left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan over mid-on for four more in the next over. Shakib was the victim again two overs later when Tendulkar shimmied down the pitch and cleared the ropes for his second six of the innings. Ishant Sharma edged one dug in short of a length by Hossain in the next over, his third five-wicket haul in his 24th Test, leaving Tendulkar on 93. But last man Sreesanth glanced a single off his first ball allowing the master batsman two balls to complete the over. | 606: DEBATE |
Tendulkar seized his chance superbly, stepping down to smash over cover for four, and then steering wide of backward point to notch his fourth century against Bangladesh. There was time for one more Tendulkar boundary, again through the covers following excellent use of his feet, before Sreesanth got a leading edge to silly point to give Tigers skipper Shakib a sixth five-wicket haul in only his 15th Test. Tamim Iqbal flicked two boundaries off Zaheer Khan in the opening over of the Bangladesh reply and soon added two more in an over from Sreesanth as his side raced to 21 without loss after four overs at lunch. After a short delay because of inferior light Imrul Kayes hit Zaheer for two fours in the first over of the resumption, and Iqbal brought up the 50 with a stylish cut off Sharma from the final ball of the 14th over. But in the next over Kayes was lbw playing across the line to Zaheer, and four balls later Shahriar Nafees was squared up by Sharma and edged to second slip. Zaheer added the key wicket of Iqbal in the next, the ball nipping back a fraction and sending the off-stump cartwheeling out of the ground, and the Tigers were content to see the light meters come out again and play abandoned for the day with more than a session lost.
