Another Sachin Tendulkar batting record was the high point of a far-from-convincing Indian display on day one of the first Test against Bangladesh.

When bad light stopped play India were 213-8 as Shakib Al Hasan and Shahadat Hossain took four wickets each.

Critically dropped on 16, Tendulkar ended the day on 76 not out, and also became the first batsman to pass the 13,000-run threshhold in Test cricket.

He is the world's top scorer in both Test and one-day internationals.

After a fog-delayed start, openers Virender Sehwag (52) and Gautam Gambhir (23) got India off to a decent-enough start, but they soon lost their way.

606: DEBATE

Sehwag passed his 50 in the first over after lunch, as he hit three boundaries in four deliveries off Shahadat, but then the match turned the way of the home side as India slid from 79-0 to 85-3.

Sehwag was the first to go, giving Tamim Iqbal a simple catch off Shakib, with Gambhir following in the next over as he was caught behind by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim.

When Rahul Dravid (4) was bowled out by Shahadat, India were on the back foot, and despite a brief respite, there was more torment to follow for the visitors.

A fifth-wicket stand of 42 between VVS Laxman and Tendulkar calmed things somewhat but Shakib struck again when Laxman (7) overbalanced and was stumped by Rahim.

Rubel Hossain took a simple catch from a Shakib full-toss to claim the wicket of Yuvraj Singh (12), and stand-in captain Dinesh Karthik (0) was smartly snapped up by Raqibul Hasan to become Shahadat's third victim.

After tea he claimed his fourth, Amit Mishra lbw for 14, while Shakib picked off Zaheer Khan for 11.

Only Tendulkar put up any resistance, but even he had his moments, having been dropped in the slips by Imrul Kayes long before he had got into his stride.
