Draw ends Norfolk's title hopes

Norfolk Cricket

Norfolk's Minor Counties Championship match with Hertfordshire ended in a draw on Tuesday, ending the home side's hopes of claiming the title.

Norfolk were set an unlikely victory target of 397 on the final day at Manor Park, leaving them to bat out a draw.

Skipper Carl Rogers told BBC Radio Norfolk he would rather their visitors were more adventurous.

"We thought they'd gone on too much, we felt that by going for them we were going to give them the game," he said.

The result left neither side with a chance of winning the Championship, and with so much at stake, Rogers said it made Hertfordshire's refusal to declare earlier even more surprising.

"That's why I'm a little surprised," he said. "Hertfordshire were in a slightly better position than us, I thought maybe they might have been a little bit more adventurous with the declaration.

"But we're playing Cambridgeshire next week and we haven't beaten them for God knows how many years," he said.

Rogers, a veteran of the Norfolk side for the last 20 seasons, admits they have got a frustrating record against their county neighbours.

"I don't think I've ever beaten Cambridgeshire when I've played them," he added. "And to be honest we don't want a wicket as flat as that.

"I know it's nice to play on good pitches but the way they play the game they won't go for a win unless we hand it to them."
