Bernard Jr led the Windies innings on his 28th birthday |
David Bernard Jr hit an unbeaten 61 on a rain-affected third day of West Indies' second Test against Bangladesh to give the home side hope of victory. The Windies reached 192-8 in Grenada, 197 ahead, in their second innings before rain spoiled the final session. Travis Dowlin chipped in with 49, while Bangladesh captain Shakib-al-Hasan claimed 4-61 and fellow left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Jr grabbed 2-42. Bangladesh need only a draw to claim the second series win in their history. Their first series victory in nine years as a Test-playing nation came against Zimbabwe in 2005, and they lead the current two-Test series 1-0. However, they are facing a second-string West Indies side missing its big names through strike action. All-rounder Bernard Jr duly seized his chance on his 28th birthday, hitting six boundaries and a six in 71 balls. Opener Omar Phillips took his overnight 17 to 29 before picking out a fielder at deep backward square leg. Ryan Hinds gloved a sweep off the bowling of Shakib, and West Indies captain Floyd Reifer departed lbw to leave his side 95-4. | 606: DEBATE |
Dowlin was closing in on his second 50 of the match when he fell to Haque Jr, ruled out lbw though the ball appeared to be missing off stump. Bernard Jr and Darren Sammy successfully negotiated the first 45 minutes of the second session against the visitors' spin attack. But as the balance began to shift back to the home team, Enamul removed Sammy, caught at midwicket, and Chadwick Walton edged Shakib to gully. Ryan Austin fell just before tea when Shahadat Hossain forced him to hit a pull shot that was caught at mid-on. Tail-ender Tino Best had reached four not out when the showers arrived to bring an early tea break, and no further play was possible.
