Gayle has replaced Daren Ganga as one-day captain

The board reprimanded one-day captain Gayle for remarks on a website alleging a lack of support for his appointment.

Dinanath Ramnarine claimed team manager Mike Findlay approved Gayle's comments.

"The diary entry was edited by him and the rest of the entry, as released to the media, received clearance from him both verbally and in writing," he said.

In his column on the Cricinfo site, Gayle said he felt the board had not supported him after he was named one-day captain by the selectors, in place of Daren Ganga.

He also criticised the way replacement players were allowed to arrive late for the one-day series in England.

The board has said it will "pursue this matter at the end of the tour" and "take drastic action" if Gayle makes any more indiscretions.

But Wipa president Ramnarine said Gayle had nothing to apologise for.

"In the event that the above is how the matter unfolded, it seems difficult to understand why the president, Ken Gordon and Mr Findlay would meet with Chris and demand an apology for comments approved by Mr Findlay," he said.

"It is also interesting to note that it was the president, not chief executive officer Bruce Aanensen, who is also in England - who met Gayle on 25 June.

"Is this because Mr Aanensen publicly referred to the players as incompetent and felt he may have lost the respect of Chris and the team, and in fact owed them an apology?

"We all say things we may regret later on, but a president and CEO have to be especially sensitive to their public utterances."
