Having just beaten Australia 3-0 in the one-day series, there was a great deal of optimism in the England camp at the start of the 1997 series - but no-one could have predicted the extraordinary first morning at Edgbaston which saw Australia slump to 54 for 8.

England went on to win that opening Test by nine wickets, with Nasser Hussain scoring a double century. 'Ashes Coming Home' sang the Edgbaston crowd, but that optimism wasn't to last much longer.

Glenn McGrath took eight for 38 in the next Test at Lord's to help bowl England out for just 77 in their first innings. Rain denied Australia victory there but they were level after the Third Test, led superbly by Steve Waugh who scored a century in both innings despite a badly bruised right hand.

Further crushing victories at Headingley and Trent Bridge followed, ensuring Australia retained the Ashes. The series ended 3-2, with Phil Tufnell's man-of-the-match performance bringing victory in the final Test for England. Exciting though that 19-run win was, the Ashes were definitely in the right hands.
